Public Controversy: Depression Treatment

For the public controversy essay, I will be writing about how depression should be treated. There are many ways that people are treated for depression including anti-depressants, psychotherapy, and electroconvulsive therapy.

I have chosen the stance that depression should be treated by the Therapeutic Lifestyle Change program, a six-step program outlined by Dr. Stephen S. Ilardi in his novel, The Depression Cure. The six-step program includes lifestyle elements such as dietary omega-3 fatty acids, engaging activity, physical exercise, sunlight exposure, social support, and sleep. The counter argument to this controversy is that medication should be used and can help aid in combating depression.

  1. This sounds like a very interesting argument, and you already have a well-developed position, since you agree with the author of The Depression Cure. You can then focus your research on understanding the other positions (so you can better argue against them) and understanding the beliefs of the audience you have chosen (so you can use effective strategies to accomplish your purpose).
