For my final paper, I have chosen to do the public controversy topic, and the topic that I want to write about is childhood obesity. There is a lot of debate about whether or not the government should get involved in helping prevent childhood obesity. I have found an article on the background of the conflict, an article from Michelle Obama stating why she wants to launch efforts in Congress, and an article from Sarah Palin's point of view stating why it is not the government's place to tell people to eat healthy. I personally agree with Michelle Obama that government should get involved. Based on my research, I have found that childhood obesity is a serious issue, and if parents are not doing anything to help their children than government has every right.

If you agree with Michelle Obama's position, then this means that you already have a well-developed position, as outlined by her. This also means that you can focus your research on understanding the counterarguments (so you better rebut them) and on understanding the beliefs and feelings of your audience (so you can better convince them to adopt your position).
