Public Controversy: Childhood Obesity

Children are growing to be obese at a very young age. According to the National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, Childhood obesity has more than tripled in the past 30 years. What have we done to create such an unhealthy lifestyle for these young kids? People ask who should be in charge of helping and implementing healthier lifestyles for the young kids. Some people say that the government should be in charge of helping the kids but others feel like the parents play the key role in helping these overweight children. I feel like the parents of the kids are the root of this epidemic and argue that if the parents change there eating lifestyle they can change the eating habits of their young children to get rid of this childhood obesity epidemic.

  1. You could look to medical studies to find support for your argument. Meanwhile, you might look at other opinion articles that make a similar argument to check out what rhetorical strategies they've used.

If you are speaking to an audience of parents, how will you convince parents who aren't able to control their own weight and health?
