PBS Frontline “The Pot Republic” explores the conflicts surrounding medical marijuana laws and farming in California. The legalization of medical marijuana opened the doors for a huge business market and Oakland city officials wanted to take advantage. The city of Oakland was taking steps to establishing the first government run industrial farming of medical marijuana, but plans were put on hold when the US Department of Justice stepped in and declared this illegal and warned of the punishments to come if plans continued. Due to the blurred line between medical marijuana and black market marijuana and the differing local, state, and national laws problems have be encountered by law enforcement officials in California.
