Research: Obesity

In my research I have found that education can reduce obesity rates. In an article titled “What Should Government Do to Reduce Obesity?” there is evidence cited that educating Americans can lower BMI and probability of obesity. This research is from a 2006 study on nutrition labels. Mandatory nutrition labeling had a positive effect on Americans’ eating habits and the quality of food they were eating. Having these nutrition labels educated Americans about the nutritional values of the foods they were previously buying.

Also, in my research I found evidence that starting education at a younger age has a positive impact as well. Mandating physical education in schools would teach kids a healthier lifestyle from a young age. This would subsequently improve kids’ health as adults and reinforce exercising as a better alternative than being sedentary. Overall, my research has supported the idea that education can have a positive impact on lowering obesity rates.
