Regulating Drug Research

Julio Sotelo's article Regulation of Clinical Research Sponsored by Pharmaceutical Companies: A Proposal found in the Public Library of Science presents one way to deal with the regulation of research funded by pharmaceutical companies. Sotelo argues that pharmaceuticals are a major commodity with lots of money invested in new drugs which can lead to unethical regulation in order to make a profit. The suggested solution is to create a third party committee that will select the institution to conduct, the amount of research funding the institution will receive, etc so drug companies are not directly sponsoring research institutions. Sotelo provides one option in dealing with the pharmaceutical companies' involvement in drug research.
