Public Controversy-Plastic Bag Ban in Austin

For my public controversy essay, I have decided to discuss the plastic bag ban currently going on in our Austin community. By banning plastic bags, our governor is forcing the population to utilize reusable 'green' bags. After much research, I have chosen the side of which I will debate for. I believe that we should continue to utilizing plastic bags in Austin. This is because these reusable 'green' bags actually captures bacteria, and are harmful to the health of its users.

The counter argument for this controversy is that eliminating plastic bags would be better for the health of our environment. I found through research that this side of the argument has many statistics to support this claim. However, it lacks how it will effect the health of our population individually.

  1. I like how your argument pits a commitment to environmental health against a commitment to individual health. This argument has a lot of rhetorical potential. How will you convince people that their own health is more important than the environment's (especially if they could potentially keep both healthy by using and washing the re-usable bags)?

You can focus your research on finding reliable sources that prove how unhealthy re-usable bags can be. In your argument, you may want to use a good dose of pathos, since pathos is usually used by environmentalists in their arguments.
